Ian Lowe is a leading British marine painter, specialising in warships from the Pre-Dreadnought and Dreadnought eras up till the Second World War.
Ian also paints early US Naval ships and scenes.
Ian Lowe was born in Lichfield and trained in the 1960s as a painter at Walsall School of Art and Wolverhampton College of Art, later attending Westhill College of Education and, in 1986-7, Birmingham Polytechnic.
Although living in the English Midlands Ian has had a lifelong love of the sea and ships and has always painted these subjects. After more than forty years teaching the traditional disciplines of art and design, during which he continued his own studio painting, Ian has now re-established himself as a full-time, specialist marine artist.
Ian's marine painting first developed in the 1970s, with attention to detail and accuracy being the basis of his technique. He had several successful one-man shows of marine paintings and his work was featured regularly in Ships Monthly magazine. Naval subjects predominated, focussing on the period of the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Examples of Ian Lowe's marine painting may be found in British and American private, corporate and public collections including those of the Imperial War Museum, the Royal Naval Reserve (Tayside Division) and the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
