"Shamrock and Lulworth off the Needles"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Two of the greatest racing yachts of the first half of the twentieth century battling for victory at Ryde in The Royal Victoria Yacht Club Regatta of 1929.

The opening day of the regatta featured a circuit of the Isle of Wight for yachts exceeding 21 metres and Shamrock, owned by Sir Thomas Lipton, and Lulworth, owned by Mr A.A. Paton, totally dominated the race, struggling for supremacy over nearly six hours of sailing time. As the pair passed the Needles and the celebrated local lighthouse, Lulworth finally forged ahead and was eventually victorious, her winning margin being only forty-one seconds.

"Britannia racing Valkyrie III and Ailsa"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

The summer of 1895 saw the "Big Class" in the Clyde for the Scottish season. This was to be the debut for Lord Dunraven's newly completed America's Cup challenger Valkyrie III.

Valkyrie III was due to race, among others, the Royal Yacht Britannia, launched for The Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in 1893. Valkyrie III was extremely light with a massive sail area. This made her a fine 'light airs' yacht and indeed she beat Britannia in such conditions during the Clyde series. However, the Muir Memorial Challenge Cup race was held on the 3rd July in gusty weather better suited to the Royal yacht with its smaller sails. This race was to be one of the fastest matches sailed on the Clyde during those years, with Britannia averaging a speed of 11 knots over the course. The final result gave Britannia the Cup, with Ailsa coming home in second place.

"Vigilant and Britannia duelling for The Queen's Cup"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

During the 1894 Scottish racing season, spectators and yachting enthusiasts were treated to one of the most exciting races ever witnessed on the Clyde.

The Queen's Cup rules stated that there must be a minimum of three yachts on the start line. Britannia and Vigilant therefore required another challenger for the Cup and, in a very generous gesture, the owner of Marjorie, Mr. J. Coats, entered his yacht in the full knowledge that she had no realistic chance of beating either of the two racing giants.

The start was off Hunters Quay and the race consisted of two circuits of a course around Skelmorlie, Ascog and Kilcreggan. The weather was perfect, with a light to moderate southerly breeze.

Britannia led from the start with Vigilant in hot pursuit; the hugely outclassed Marjorie fell behind quickly and retired at the end of the first circuit when half-an-hour behind.

Vigilant hounded Britannia around the entire course; as they neared the finish there was a huge roar of approval and applause from the many spectators on shore and in the spectator vessels. Vigilant took line honours from Britannia by only 67 seconds and Britannia won the race on corrected time.

"The Last Beat"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

"The Last Beat" depicts two classic yachts, Shamrock and Columbia, in the last of their famous America's Cup races in 1899. The race was held along the Jersey shore on October 29th and the run down to the mark was described by one American author as 'the finest fifteen mile run in international yachting history'.

The two craft raced neck and neck until the last beat, when Columbia finally edged ahead. Once in the lead Columbia turned the stake boat faster than her rival and was eventually victorious by over six minutes.,p>

"Moonbeam at the Fife Regatta"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Steven Dews's memorable limited edition celebrates the Fife Regatta, which was held on the Clyde in June 1998. The regatta was organised to bring some of the greatest yachts built by the famous Clyde yard of W Fife & Son back to their birthplace. The yard thrived from 1790 to 1965 and Moonbeam III was the fastest of the surviving Fife yachts to return for the celebrations.

Designed by William Fife III and built in 1903, Moonbeam III was victorious in two of her races and is depicted here during the final event of the great regatta The Kyles of Bute Race.

"An Opportune Breeze from the South East'"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

This wonderful print depicts four Big Class yachts racing off Dartmouth in August 1893 in a regatta organised by the Start Bay Yacht Club. During the late morning of the second day, an opportune breeze blew which enabled all four yachts to start racing. Britannia was eventually victorious, followed across the finishing line by Navahoe, Satanita and Calluna.

"Stars and Stripes"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

This picture depicts a crucial event during the third race of the 1987 America's Cup on the first windward leg after Kookaburra III converged for the third time ahead of Stars and Stripes.

Dennis Conner, at the helm of Stars and Stripes, went for an abrupt duck behind Kookaburra's stern instead of tacking, as it was Kookaburra's right of way. Kookaburra attempted a "slam-dunk" but Stars and Stripes still had a lot of boat speed after her manoeuvre, and powered ahead through Kookaburra's lee. Kookaburra was then forced to tack onto starboard to clear the turbulent air coming from Stars and Stripes.

Stars and Stripes went on to win this race by 1 minute 46 seconds.

"Battling 12s"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Steven Dews's Limited Edition is a depiction of The Battle of the Twelves; the Round the Island Race which was the main feature of the great America's Cup Jubilee in 2001.

Tuesday August 21st 2001 was an unique day in the history of the America's Cup and especially in the history of the international 12 metre class yachts. 37 yachts from all generations, the largest fleet of 12 metres ever seen, was assembled on the start line off Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The clockwise course took the competitors around the Isle of Wight in a 150-year jubilee tribute to the Royal Yacht Squadron's 1851 100 Guinea Cup.

From left to right in Steven Dews's tribute the yachts depicted are: arguably the most famous 12 metre of all time and the winner of the America's Cup in 1983, Australia II; Sovereign, the British challenger in 1964; Vanity V; the beautiful 1939 Flica II; the classic Nyala and the 1958 British challenger Sceptre.

Spectators on a perfect August day saw a century of yachting's most illustrious history sail past, reaching the turning mark off Bembridge around noon. The first yachts to arrive were the modern ocean racers, led by Stealth, followed by the large classic yachts which have dominated several generations of racing history.

"Australia II tacks for the line"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

This dramatic print marks perhaps the greatest yachting occasion of all time. 1983 was the year in which the Americans were finally to lose the grip they had held on the America's Cup for over one hundred and thirty years.

Racing off Rhode Island against the American boat Liberty, skippered by Dennis Connor, the revolutionary winged keel on Alan Bond's Australian challenger, Australia II, brought her supremacy on the water.

Although the Americans put up a valiant fight, Liberty lost the Cup in the final race of the seven race series. In Steven Dews's tribute, we see skipper John Bertrand taking Australia II on the final tack to the line and to victory.

"The Wind Piped Loud from the West"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Britannia, as well as three other famous Big Class cutters, ready to answer the starter's gun on a breezy morning in August 1893. Although Santanita was the most powerful of the yachts to race, due to her unwise decision to hoist an extra sail, she was actually beaten by the smaller Britannia on the day.

"Candida and Astra off Cowes"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Astra K2 was built in 1928 and Candida K8 a year later in 1929. Both yachts were built as Bermudan rig cutters to the International Rule which came into force in 1928 and they raced each other on the Big Class British regatta circuit for many years.

This print shows them sailing against strong winds off Cowes, on the Isle of Wight.

"Round the Gybe Mark"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

The 2004 Antigua Classic Regatta brought together the 'J' Class Ranger of John Williams and his arch rival, Ronald de Waal's 'J' Class yacht Velsheda. After losing the first race through a poor start Williams was hoping for a dramatic improvement but, in spite of all the technology, power and muscle of Ranger, they miscalculated the start and allowed Velsheda to escape and take the lead to win. On the third day of racing the breeze had strengthened to 25 knots and, with a tight start line, a dramatic start was guaranteed. Velsheda was forced to sail through a dangerously small gap of 4 feet between the committee boat and another much smaller yacht, Vittfarne, which was sailing in a different class. Ranger stayed well clear to take and maintain the lead until the gybe mark which, taken wide, left enough room for Velsheda to squeeze through and lead to the finish. However, having not established an overlap before taking the inside course at the gybe mark, Velsheda had broken the race rules and took a penalty. Also she had inadvertently touched the gybe mark and would be penalized, which would allow Ranger to win on handicap. The overall results were 2 - 1 to Velsheda, who was therefore victorious on handicap.

"Rolex Swan Regatta"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Crackerjack, a Swan 46 racing yacht, is seen racing around the East Lepe buoy in the Solent during the challenging Rolex Swan European Regatta in 1997.

Due to the light winds, courses were kept short during the regatta, which allowed for plenty of close action for the large Class 1 yachts such as Highland Fling, Sotto Voce and Dark Swan. However, Crackerjack kept the pressure on the larger yachts and in recent years has won many prizes. She made a stunning sight, beating up the boisterous Solent during this breezy battle.

"Tacking Duel"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Steven Dews believes that the Nauta Swan 46 is one of the prettiest yachts ever to have been designed. Each year, Nauta Swan 46s from all over the world meet for a highly competitive regatta and the incident depicted in this limited edition print comes from the Swan Rolex Regatta off the coast of Guernsey in 1993.

The battling yachts are shown tacking ferociously against the choppy sea, with the skippers of each fighting to gain advantage.

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

A fleet of Sygma 38s races off Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. David Troman designed the Sygma 38 and, like the Sygma 33, it is a popular design regularly raced on the Solent. The yacht leading the fleet, Yeoman XXVIII, is often helmed by HRH Prince Philip during the annual Cowes Week Regatta.

"The Dainty"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

The Dainty has a long and chequered history. She was built in Bermuda in 1897 and proved to be a superb ocean-goer. Despite her excellence and superior quality, she was abandoned by 1920 and found beached by Alfred Darrell, who completely rebuilt her.

After 1923, The Dainty was raced on a regular basis by Mr Darrell, and by several other owners following his death in 1951. In 1966, The Dainty was bought by Michael Drew, who spent seven years rebuilding and refitting her. Then in 1988 Hurricane Emily struck, in which The Dainty was irreparably damaged. Mr and Mrs Drew sadly donated her to Bermuda's Maritime Museum, where she was lovingly restored once again. It is apt that the final resting place of The Dainty is the place which was host to Steven Dews' prestigious exhibition of 1992. The original painting of The Dainty was purchased by the National Gallery of Bermuda.

"8 Metres Racing off the West Solent"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

In speaking of his work, Steven Dews has commented: "To paint marine scenes you've got to be a sailor. You've got to feel how the wind moves, how it affects the sea and how it affects the boat. You've also got to know the rules of the road! Otherwise it is impossible to build a painting that is technically correct. Every painting to me is an adventure - setting the mood of the sky and thus the mood of the painting - but there are no shortcuts - it is 5% inspiration and 95% sheer hard work."

"Britannia off Cowes"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

Britannia was designed by George Watson of Glasgow and built in 1892 on the Clyde by D & W Henderson. Commissioned by The Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, the yacht was one of the most successful Big Class yachts in history.

Throughout her career she underwent many modifications to keep pace with the ever-changing racing rules, but her basic hull design kept her up with, and in front of, the leaders.

"Endeavour and Velsheda Racing in Torbay"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

This painting features Endeavour, one of the greatest British racing yachts of the pre-war era.

Endeavour joined the racing circuit in 1934 in order to 'tune up' for her planned attempt at the America's Cup. However, the racing at these regattas was not serious enough to provide a real test of the yacht's ability, so her owner, Sopwith, arranged a private contest at Torbay with the only other 'J' Class able to provide real competition. Although Velsheda was fast, she proved to be no match for Sopwith's new yacht.

Subsequently Endeavour raced for the America's Cup itself in Rhode Island against Rainbow, the American defender. Endeavour was in fact the only British 'J' Class to come close to taking the Americas Cup from the Americans.

"Big Class Astra Rounding the Mark"

-- STEVEN DEWS (British, born 1949)

By 1932 the era of the 'Big Class' yachts was drawing to a close as the American 'J' Class rule was gradually introduced. Led by Astra, the leading yachts of the time reduced their canvas sizes to bring themselves into line with the new American rules. This created a highly competitive 'Big Class' season's racing, from which this subject depicts Astra at Solent Fortnight.
