| Tuesday 29th December 1812: the British Royal Navy 38-gun frigate Java cuts under the stern of the American frigate Constitution (44-gun) to unleash a raking broadside during an engagement off the Brazilian coast. After nearly four hours of battle, Java's ensign was pulled down, to register Constitution's captain William Bainbridge's first victory (and the ship her second) over a British frigate.

| **Cover art from the Alexander Kent "Bolitho" novel** As 1794 draws to a close, Captain Richard Bolitho, commanding the old 74-gun ship-of-the-line Hyperion, leaves Plymouth to join a squadron blockading the rising power of Revolutionary France. Hyperion, as part of a small British force, gives chase to a powerful French squadron which has vanished into the Atlantic. Hyperion at length closes with the French three-decker Tornade.
