"A Dutch yacht and other shipping at sea in a stiff breeze"--
|
| This is a superb example of Louis Dodd's peerless painting technique, an oil on panel that celebrates and rivals the great Dutch seventeenth century marine artists revered by Dodd. A beautiful yacht runs before the rising wind towards a fleet of Dutch warships and attendant craft. The yacht's stern is highly ornate, rendered in the extraordinary detail of which only Dodd of twentieth century marine artists was capable, and signifies the status of her owner, presumably an admiral, rich captain or visiting grandee. The detail extends to all parts of the painting and is made possible by Dodd's technique of painting on smooth grounds of chalk covered with gesso laid onto beautiful mahogany or hardwood panels. Dodd built up glazes of thin oil paint, one on top of the other, to achieve his luminous cloud and light effects, in the case of this painting producing the infinitely subtle greys, blues and pale greens of Dutch waters and skies. Marine Artists.co.uk always takes the greatest care that our photographs properly represent the prints and paintings on our website but this Louis Dodd is especially subtle and hard to capture in a photograph. On our screens the image appears perhaps a little too blue and the colours of the flags a fraction strong but we emphasise that images vary from screen to screen. The painting may be viewed by appointment at our Chelsea (London) houseboat.
Oil on bevelled mahogany panel 15 1/2 x 22 inches (39.5 x 56 cm) - unframed size Signed, lower right Painted in the early 1980s and framed in a swept gold frame with the title inscribed on a tablet below the painting

"To Risks Unknown"-- GEOFFREY HUBAND (British, born 1945) |
| **The original cover art for the Douglas Reeman novel** "Adriatic, 1943 ... The Navy's Special Operations Forces had received the word from the high command: from now on, there would be no retreat. For the men of the HMS Thistle it meant a new kind of war - a war of stealth and cunning far beyond enemy lines. The Thistle was a battlewise corvette, drafted for secret strikes in the Nazi-bound Adriatic. No matter that half her crew were green boys and the other half hardtack misfits. In war, no one cared about the past - only the future - what men could wrest from their guns and the sea." "Constitution racing Reliance off Sandy Hook, 1903"-- THOMAS OLIVER (British, born 1979) |
| Built by Nat Heresoff in 1901 as the new America's Cup defender, Constitution had to win the right to defend by beating the current champion Columbia...and in 1901 both Columbia and her crew were in perfect racing trim. Despite this, Heresoff believed that Constitution would prove the better and faster yacht but her crew were outsmarted and out-sailed by Columbia who had the legendary Charlie Barr at the helm.
Constitution came back in 1903 to defeat Columbia in that year's America's Cup time trials but in her turn Constitution was defeated by the more modern Reliance, who also had Charlie Barr at the helm.

"Torpedo Run"-- GEOFFREY HUBAND (British, born 1945) |
| **The original cover art for the Douglas Reeman novel** "Black Sea, 1943 ... The Russians were fighting a desperate battle to regain control. But their one real weakness was on the water: whatever they did, the Germans did it better, and the daring hit-and-run tactics of the E-boats plagued them. At last the British agreed to send them a small flotilla of motor torpedo boats under the command of John Devane. Devane had been in the Navy since the outbreak of war. More than a veteran, he was a survivor - and the two rarely went together in the savage war of MTBs. Given command at short notice, Devane soon learned that, even against the vast and raging background of the Eastern Front, war could still be a personal duel between individuals." "The Foudroyant under tow off a coast"--
|
| A wonderfully atmospheric painting by S. Francis Smitheman of Nelson's great Foudroyant in the evening of her days. H.M.S. Foudroyant was Nelson's flagship in 1799-1800. She was bought by the philanthropist Geoffrey Cobb in 1892; he restored her and planned to run her as a working ship touring coastal resorts and training boys. Before this plan could come to fruition she was wrecked in a gale off Blackpool in 1897. Cobb later bought and restored another ship for the same purposes, H.M.S. Trincomalee now at West Hartlepool.

"H.M.S. Saracen"-- GEOFFREY HUBAND (British, born 1945) |
| **The original cover art for the Douglas Reeman novel** Malta, 1941 ... To most people HMS Saracen is just an ugly, obsolete ship with an equally ugly recent history: her last commander is due for court martial after shelling the troops he was sent to protect. But to Captain Richard Chesnaye she brings back memories – memories of the First World War when he and the old monitor went through the Gallipoli campaign together. It seems that captain and ship are both past their best. But as the war enters a new phase Chesnaye senses the possibility of a fresh, significant role - for him and the Saracen. Her crew: a roster of has-beens, with an admiral of faded glory. But in the killing ground of the Atlantic, Nazi U-boats ran swift and deadly. "The Last Raider"-- GEOFFREY HUBAND (British, born 1945) |
| **The original cover art for the Douglas Reeman novel** "Kiel, December 1917 ... The Vulkan sailed from Kiel. She was a German commerce raider. The last raider. First of all she had to break through the British blockade. Then, striking west and south to the open seas, to sink and destroy every ship, every cargo before it could be delivered to the enemies of the Fatherland. At this stage of the war, Germany needed a gesture and the Vulkan was to be that gesture. There had been other raiders, but unlike those earlier predecessors, she would be alone with every man's hand against her. And to Korvetten Kapitän Felix von Steiger fell the duty of making this voyage possible." Framed Oil Painting on Canvas 20 x 28 inches (51 x 71 cm) (Size excluding frame) Signed, lower left
