The painting shows the early stages of the action; late afternoon, wild weather and snow in the air were recorded.  From left to right we see Amazon, Droits de l’Homme and Indefatigable. The ships manoeuvred in such close order that Indefatigable felt herself in danger at one point of being run down by the French ship. 

Droits de l’Homme is seen here with her masts and rigging still generally intact but a little later in the action she lost her fore-topmast and her main-topmast.  Droits de l’Homme was a full two-decker 74-gun ship but the heavy weather in which this action took place made it impossible for her to open her lower deck gun ports.  It can be seen clearly in the painting that all her lower gun ports are closed.

Spring of 1797 ... Richard Bolitho brings the 100-gun Euryalus home to Falmouth to be flagship of the hastily formed squadron which has been chosen to make the first British re-entry to the Mediterranean for nearly a year. As flag captain, Bolitho is made to contend with the unyielding attitudes of his new admiral, as well as the devious requirements of the squadron's civilian advisor.
    England is still stunned by the naval mutiny at Spithead, in which Bolitho's admiral was personally involved, and as the squadron sets sail the air is already alive with rumour of an even greater uprising in the ships at the Nore. Only when the squadron is drawn to a bloody embrace with the enemy does the admiral see the strength in Bolitho's trust and care for his men – but by then it is almost too late for any of them.

This magnificent, large painting was commissioned by a client who has spent much of his career in the Middle East and who wanted a picture of an action between a medium-sized British frigate and an Arab dhow of the type used to such effect by the Barbary Coast pirates - detail shown.

It is one of Geoffrey Huband's most sucessful depictions of action with an overwhelming sense of speed and movement combined with minute detail of men and rigging.

Malta, 1941 ... To most people HMS Saracen is just an ugly, obsolete ship with an equally ugly recent history: her last commander is due for court martial after shelling the troops he was sent to protect. But to Captain Richard Chesnaye she brings back memories – memories of the First World War when he and the old monitor went through the Gallipoli campaign together. It seems that captain and ship are both past their best. But as the war enters a new phase Chesnaye senses the possibility of a fresh, significant role - for him and the Saracen.

"Kiel, December 1917 ... The Vulkan sailed from Kiel.  She was a German commerce raider. The last raider.  First of all she had to break through the British blockade. Then, striking west and south to the open seas, to sink and destroy every ship, every cargo before it could be delivered to the enemies of the Fatherland. At this stage of the war, Germany needed a gesture and the Vulkan was to be that gesture. There had been other raiders, but unlike those earlier predecessors, she would be alone with every man's hand against her. And to Korvetten Kapitän Felix von Steiger fell the duty of making this voyage possible."
