GEOFF HUNT, Past President R.S.M.A. - Limited Edition Prints Gallery

"Victory breaks the Enemy Line, Trafalgar, 21st October 1805"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

For six hours Nelson's immortal flagship has rolled towards the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar. Battered by fire she has been unable to return up to now, her climactic moment arrives as Nelson drives her into the enemy line.

Victory is about to pass under the stern of the French flagship Bucentaure. The port broadside of Victory, about to be unleashed, is thought to have dismounted twenty guns and killed or wounded four hundred men, virtually eliminating Admiral Villeneuve's flagship from the battle. Entering from the left is the 74-gun Redoutable from whose fighting-tops was fired the shot that killed Nelson.

"Victory and squadron in light airs"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Victory is shown with her stunsails set to take advantage of the very lightest breeze while patrolling on blockade.

The British fleet kept to sea for two years carrrying out the huge task of blockading France's fleet in ports around the French and Spanish coasts. They prevented the French from concentrating a large enough fleet to fight for control of the English Channel and allow Napoleon to invade Britain.

"Vanguard in heavy weather off Toulon, 19th May 1798"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

On the 19th May 1798, Nelson nearly lost Vanguard, which had been his flagship at The Nile.

Nelson was waiting on blockade off Toulon and was caught completely unprepared by a storm. He was in the greatest danger of losing his ship and she was saved only by the great bravery of Captain Ball of the Alexander.

It is a tantalising speculation as to how the next seven years would have unfolded for both Britain and Nelson had Vanguard been lost in 1798 and Nelson's career suffered the consequences.

"Agamemnon opens fire on the Ca Ira, 13th March 1795"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Agamemnon outpaced the rest of the British fleet on the 13th March, 1795, and engaged the Ca Ira (which was supported by two other ships of the line) on her own. Although crippled, Ca Ira was much larger than Agamemnon

Nelson called Agamemnon 'the finest ship I ever sailed in'.

Nelson commanded the 28-gun frigate Boreas in the West Indies; she was one of his earliest commands.

The inhabitants of Nevis sued Nelson for a huge sum as a consequence of his efforts to enforce Navigation Act, but he was vindicated.

"Victory races Temeraire for the Enemy Line, Trafalgar, 21st October 1805"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

SOLD OUT IN BOTH FORMATS

As the British line rolled gently towards the French and Spanish fleets on the morning of Trafalgar - they took six hours to get within range because of the light winds - Temeraire began to overtake Nelson's Victory which, naturally, was leading. Nelson's reaction was predictable; 'I'll thank you, Captain Harvey, to take your proper station" he shouted to Temeraire's captain.

"Victory on the Atlantic Chase, 1805"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Nelson's Victory leads the British battle fleet pell-mell across the Atlantic to the West Indies in August 1805, flanked by a screen of frigates.

The French admiral Villeneuve had slipped away from his blockaded European ports in 1805 and headed for British West Indian territories. Nelson set off in hot pursuit but failed to find Villeneuve and returned to Europe in his wake.

"The Battle of St. Vincent, 14th February 1797"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

One of Nelson's great actions; this shows the first British ships engaging the main Spanish force at around 1.50 pm. HMS Captain is seen in the distance.

Geoff Hunt writes: "This scene hinges on the actions of Nelson, then a commodore (having no fewer than four admirals superior to him actually present on the day).

In a characteristic combination of eagerness, daring and independence that bordered on insubordination, he ordered his ship, the Captain, 74 guns, to "cut the corner" on a rather slow fleet manoeuvre and so got into action with the Spanish flagship, the 130-gun Santisima Trinidad, and at least two other first-rate battleships before the rest of the British fleet caught up with him.

I finally chose to paint the moment when the lead British ship, Culloden (centre, but masked by the foreground Blenheim) is about to reach the battered Captain (furthest right) before pressing on th the Spanish flagship (right centre).

In the confused fighting that followed, Nelson was to perform his well-known feat of capturing the 80-gun ship, the San Nicholas, and using her as a bridge to capture another even larger, the 112-gun San Josef.

The ship entering at extreme left is the 98-gun Prince George, which was to play a major role in knocking out the San Josef."

A Genoese barque is being towed across the harbour and, in the background on the right a British 74-gun warship is seen.

"The Admiral's Daughter"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

This image was used as the cover of the eighth book in Julian Stockwin's "Kydd" series of novels. Julian Stockwin was asked about the cover of The Admiral's Daughter in a recent interview:

"As usual, Geoff Hunt RSMA did a superb original painting on which the cover is based. It is almost Impressionistic in nature, and depicts a Royal Navy landing party going ashore on anti-smuggling patrol. The amount of smuggling in those days was incredible. In 1783, it was estimated that of a quarter of all tea smuggled into England and half of the illicit brandy entered by way of Cornwall and Devon."

"H.M.S. Fantome in pursuit of a Slaver, 30th April 1841"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

200 years ago Britain was the first major nation to outlaw slavery. A Royal Navy squadron was established that would patrol the seas of West Africa for the next 60 years: searching and detaining slave ships, liberating some 150,000 enslaved Africans, playing a pivotal role in the suppression of this barbaric practice.

British Navy crew were in despair as they boarded overcrowded, disease-ridden slave ships, and suffered terribly from tropical diseases including yellow fever and malaria...

Geoff Hunt's dramatic print illustrates the one of the most desperate actions of the campaign:

"AM... observed a strange Sail bearing ENE. Made Sail in Chase of a Brigantine..." so begins the logbook account of a memorable pursuit by the brig Fantome, Captain Butterfield, on anti-slavery patrol. After a 24-hour chase Fantome caught the runaway and discovered her to be the fast Portuguese slaver Josephina, which had already outrun four other Men of War, and was carrying 290 slaves. A lieutenant and eight men were put on board to conduct the prize to Sierra Leone, where the slaves could be freed.

"Under Fire off Manhattan Island, 17th August 1776"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The morning after their unpleasant night encounter with American fireships (subject of the print "Fireships on the Hudson"), H.M. ships Rose (foreground) and Phoenix, together with the small tenders Tryal and Shuldham, retired at some speed down the Hudson, urged on by a strong north-easterly breeze. All along the way they came under fire from numerous Revolutionary batteries located on Manhattan Island and on the western shore, and suffered casualties and damage , while Phoenix had her longboat, towing astern laden with an anchor cable, sunk by one lucky shot.

The ships are pictured somewhere about the vicinity of what is now West 14th Street; ahead is the relative safety of the open harbor, the main British fleet anchorage being off Staten Island.

"Randolph against the odds"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The American frigate Randolph sighted the British 64-gun ship of the line H.M.S. Yarmouth on March 7th, 1778, off Barbados. Captain Biddle of the Randolph had been a midshipman in the Royal Navy and must have been well aware that his ship was completely out-gunned by Yarmouth but decided, nonetheless, to attack.

For twenty minutes the small American frigate survived by speed of manouvre and, by firing several broadsides to each of Yarmouth's, caused damage to the British ship but Randolph's gallant and over-matched fight was brought to a close by the explosion of her magazine

"H.M.S. Bulwark at the International Fleet Review, 28 June 2005"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The Fleet Review at Portsmouth, at which Her Majesty the Queen reviewed ships from many nations' Navies, formed part of Trafalgar 200, commemorating the bicentenary of the battle of Trafalgar in 1805

In the centre of Geoff Hunt's wonderful painting we see H.M.S. Bulwark (just recently deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean). To the left of the painting is H.M.S. Ocean and betwen these two ships is Bulwark's sister ship H.M.S. Albion.

To the right of Bulwark a line of frigates moves up, led by H.M.S. Cumberland and including H.M.A.S. Anzac, H.M.S. Gloucester, Westminster and Grafton and H.M.C.S. Montreal. Beyond Bulwark may be glimpsed French and Spanish vessels, including the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, and the Belgian corvette B.N.S. Westdiep. In the foreground one of Bulwark's assault craft cruises at high speed.

Geoff Hunt, President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, was on board a ship taking part in the Review and has painted this magnificent record of the day.

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

By 1797 the fourth-rate was not considered fit for the line of battle, yet that is where H.M.S. Leander found herself, at the Battle of the Nile on 1st August. Here seen passing the grounded Culloden and the brig Mutine, Leander played a distinguished part in the ensuing night action.

"H.M.S. Surprise - Captured French ship, rated Fifth-Rate"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Though credited with 34 guns, this very small frigate might be better described as a corvette. Originally the French l'Unité, she was captured by H.M.S. Inconstant in April 1796 and is here seen arriving at Ajaccio. Renamed H.M.S. Surprise, she served until 1802 but is now best known for her subsequent fictional career in Patrick O'Brian's novels.

"Fireships on the Hudson River. Night attack on HM ships Phoenix and Rose, August 1776"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

On July 12, 1776 the British sent a small squadron of warships into the Hudson River to attack the flanks of General Washington's forces. The squadron consisted of the Phoenix, 44-gun, Rose, 20-gun, the schooner Tryal, and two small tenders, the Charlotte and the Shuldham. Their orders were to operate as far up the river as Peekskill. They found themselves in an uneasy situation, with Washington's army in unknown force on both shores. After a month of inconclusive skirmishes, the ships were anchored off "Colonel Phillip's Farm" on the night of 16th August. Just before midnight two vessels were sighted nearby, closing in. Their crews were seen setting fires and abandoning ship - the American rebels were using fireships. While the British were still hurrying to cut their cables the first fireship hit the Charlotte and both vessels burned out. The second fireship narrowly missed the Rose but crashed into the bow of the flagship Phoenix. It took twenty desperate minutes for the Phoenix's crew to fend off the blazing hulk but their situation had become extremely dangerous. The squadron retreated downriver next day, taking some damage while passing the American batteries, and anchored off Staten Island - where they joined Vice-Admiral Lord Howe, recently arrived with the main fleet and army.

"Shipbuilding along the Kennebec River, the Henry B. Hyde alongside"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The Henry B Hyde was launched in November 1884 at the Chapman & Flint yard in Bath, Maine. Built for the lucrative San Francisco trade, she rounded the Horn 16 times and was generally considered the finest "Downeaster" ever built. At 267 LOA, 45 foot beam and 2,583 ton, she is shown here making ready for her maiden voyage. This was a treacherous prospect during Maine's brutal winter as the frequent Northeasters took the lives of many sailors.

"Launching Day, USS America The first United States battleship: Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 5 November 1782"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

In November 1776 the Continental Congress ordered the construction of three 74-gun ships, intended to be larger than their contemporaries in either the British or French navies. Only one of these ships, the USS America, was ever built and, having been gifted to France as a political gesture, she was launched as shown here, flying the flags of both nations.

USS America was constructed at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and overseen and launched by her captain-designate, John Paul Jones. The launching of the 182-foot ship into the narrow Piscataqua River was extremely difficult but was accomplished with the same skill and flair that had marked the rest of this outstanding achievement of Continental shipbuilding.

"General Washington's Wolfpack: Continental Army schooners raiding British supply ships off Cape Cod, March 1776"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

A group of the small schooners leased by General Washington while besieging the outnumbered British in Boston in 1775. These vessels were only about sixty feet long and armed with a handful of four-pounder cannon but they seriously disrupted the British attempts to supply Boston by sea and even captured a powder-ship, invaluable to the besiegers.

Washington manned his small ships with soldires who had some experience of the sea, such as the 21st Massachusetts who hailed from Marblehead.

During March 1776 the schooners were operating together in groups of up to five. Eight were originally leased. Their career lasted until 1777 when the Continental Navy was ready to go to sea, some of its officers having first served their country in the schooners of Washington's army.

"HMS Augusta: Philadelphia 1777"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

In October 1777 the Royal Navy tried to force its way up the Delaware River to make contact with the British army, then occupying Philadelphia. Although they faced strong defences in the form of underwater obstacles, shore forts and a purpose-built gunboat flotilla, it was misfortune that doomed the 64-gun Augusta which ran aground off Fort Mifflin and then caught fire.

During the morning Augusta and Merlin, also aground, came under heavy attack both from the shore batteries and Commodore Hazlewood's galleys and guardboats. Despite frantic efforts to save her, the fire gained hold on Augusta. Her crew abandoned ship and were rescued by ships including the 44-gun Roebuck, seen at the left, which herself was badly damaged. At noon Augusta's magazine exploded, destroying the ship and making her the largest British warship lost in action in the whole Revolutionary War.

Though the Royal Navy eventually reached Philadelphia, the protracted river fighting had so delayed British operations that the campaign of 1777 ground to a halt for the winter. Before the end of this winter the French were to enter the war, a fatal blow to British hopes of success.

"The Bonhomme Richard : John Paul Jones's flagship in the battle with HMS Serapis"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Two of the most famous names in American naval history are those of the Bonhomme Richard and her formidable captain John Paul Jones. Yet the ship herself was French-built, a converted merchantman, and never crossed the Atlantic under Jones's command.

Jones commanded a small squadron besides the Bonhomme Richard, mainly of French ships with French captains, though these carried commissions in the Continental Navy and the ships flew the Continental flag.

The print depicts the vessel at dawn, under easy sail. Aft, on the lower gundeck, can be seen the three gunports for the eighteen-pounder cannon which Jones had insisted upon. Beyond the Bonhomme Richard is the American Alliance, longest-lived of the Continental frigates.

"The First Shots"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

On the day of the battle of Trafalgar there was a big sea-swell running off Cape Trafalgar (the extreme south-westerly point of Spain), but very little wind. Consequently, though Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson's fleet sighted the combined Franco-Spanish fleet at 6 am, it took all of six hours before the opposing lines of battleships got close enough for cannon fire. The moment chosen for the painting is at about 12:20, when the first ranging shots were fired from the French flagship, the Bucentaure, at Nelson's 100-gun flagship Victory. Victory was followed by a line of other battleships, but this particular viewpoint glances diagonally through the gap in the British line between Victory and her next battleship astern, the Temeraire, and through that gap we see three of the accompanying lesser vessels: from left to right the frigate Sirius, the schooner Pickle, and the frigate Euryalus.

"HMS Agamemnon - Nelson's first flagship leads the squadron, Mediterranean, 1796"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The Gulf of Genoa, April 1796: Nelson commands his first squadron, flying his flag as Commodore in the 64-gun Agamemnon. The rest of the squadron follow the flagship - Meleager 32, Blanche 32, Diadem 64 and the now-immortal 16-gun brig-sloop Speedy.

Nelson was promoted Commodore in March 1796, ensuring that Agamemnon, the ship he described as his favourite, was his first flagship before he transferred his flag to HMS Captain, 74 guns, in June 1796.

The immensely powerful warships of Nelson's small squadron appear calm and tranquil in the setting sun; only Agamemnon's evening gunnery practice breaks the silence.

"HMS Victory - 100-gun ship"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The masterpiece of the great designer Sir Thomas Slade, Nelson's flagship was far from new at the Battle of Trafalgar, having begun building in 1759. "HMS Euryalus - 36-gun frigate"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

A standard design of the numerous Apollo class, Euryalus was Captain Blackwood's command during the Trafalgar campaign, where she constantly accompanied Nelson's flagship HMS Victory to repeat signals, and to keep the British fleet precisely informed of the location of the Franco-Spanish fleet.

"Mediterranean Deployment: USS Ontario leading Decatur's squadron, 1815"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

This superb print shows Lieutenant Decatur's 10 vessel squadron, sent by the USA to deter continuing attacks by the notorious Barbary Pirates of Tripoli.

U.S.S. Ontario was a ship-sloop fitted with 20 32 lb. carronnades, a very powerful short range weapon. Seen partly obscured by the lateen rigged xebec is the Guerriere a 44-gun frigate. To the right is the 36-gun frigate U.S.S. Constellation and Macedonian, a 38-gun frigate captured from the British by Decatur in 1812. Finally we see the brig U.S.S. Epervier, also taken from the British. The squadron went on to capture the Algerian Pirate's Flagship, bombard Tripoli and then negotiate the cessation of attacks on American shipping in the Mediterranean.

The captain and the three lieutenants (naval and marine) are the only commissioned officers. The principal warrant officers were the master, purser, surgeon, boatswain, gunner, carpenter and the cook; of whom the master, purser and surgeon were regarded as gentlemen, and together with the lieutenants formed the company of the wardroom.
