"Mars at Trafalgar"-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary) |
| Oil on Linen Canvas 25 x 36 inches (63.5 x 91.5 cm) Signed, lower left & dated 2008, lower right Commissioned through Marine Artists.co.uk for a British Private Collection
The third ship into action at Trafalgar, the 74-gun Mars reached the enemy line at about 12.20. Captain Duff was confronted with a bunched collection of ships, his immediate opponent being the Pluton, also 74 guns, under the command of the highly capable Commodore Cosmao-Kerjulien. Mars swung to port in order to begin a classic gunnery duel with the Pluton, the moment depicted in both these sketches. Unfortunately this move misfired, since Captain Duff then saw that the Spanish 3-decker Santa Anna was right in front of him, and so swung further up into the wind to avoid collision. Cosmao-Kerjulien seized this opportunity to rake the Mars from astern, as did the Spanish Monarca; these broadsides not only killed Captain Duff but destroyed essential elements of Mars's running rigging, rendering the ship unmanoeuverable and exposing her to much further punishment. Some time later, no less a figure than Admiral Villeneuve somehow finished up aboard Mars, having surrendered to a Captain of Marines originally sent from the Conqueror. Geoff Hunt, 2008

"The action between the British frigates Indefatigable (Captain Pellew) and Amazon and the French 74-gun Droits de l'Homme, 1797"-- GEOFFREY HUBAND (British, born 1945) |
| The painting shows the early stages of the action; late afternoon, wild weather and snow in the air were recorded. From left to right we see Amazon, Droits de l’Homme and Indefatigable. The ships manoeuvred in such close order that Indefatigable felt herself in danger at one point of being run down by the French ship. Droits de l’Homme is seen here with her masts and rigging still generally intact but a little later in the action she lost her fore-topmast and her main-topmast. Droits de l’Homme was a full two-decker 74-gun ship but the heavy weather in which this action took place made it impossible for her to open her lower deck gun ports. It can be seen clearly in the painting that all her lower gun ports are closed.

"H.M.S.Amphion leaving Malta, 17th June 1803"-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary) |
| Oil on Linen Canvas 24 x 30 inches (61 x 76 cm) Signed, lower left & dated 2009, lower right Commissioned through Marine Artists.co.uk for a Private Collection in the Far East
The beautiful Amphion is seen ghosting out of Valletta harbour at dawn, passing Fort St. Elmo. She carries Lord Nelson as a passenger and therefore wears his flag. This is one of Geoff Hunt’s most poetic and atmospheric paintings; the dawn light and reflections in the water are rendered superbly. As the delighted client who commissioned the work put it “one can sense the expectation of a journey commenced”.
