LOUIS DODD (British, 1943-2006)

"A Dutch yacht and other shipping at sea in a stiff breeze"

This is a superb example of Louis Dodd's peerless painting technique, an oil on panel that celebrates and rivals the great Dutch seventeenth century marine artists revered by Dodd.

A beautiful yacht runs before the rising wind towards a fleet of Dutch warships and attendant craft.  The yacht's stern is highly ornate, rendered in the extraordinary detail of which only Dodd of twentieth century marine artists was capable, and signifies the status of her owner, presumably an admiral, rich captain or visiting grandee.

The detail extends to all parts of the painting and is made possible by Dodd's technique of painting on smooth grounds of chalk covered with gesso laid onto beautiful mahogany or hardwood panels.  Dodd built up glazes of thin oil paint, one on top of the other, to achieve his luminous cloud and light effects, in the case of this painting producing the infinitely subtle greys, blues and pale greens of Dutch waters and skies.

Marine Artists.co.uk always takes the greatest care that our photographs properly represent the prints and paintings on our website but this Louis Dodd is especially subtle and hard to capture in a photograph. On our screens the image appears perhaps a little too blue and the colours of the flags a fraction strong but we emphasise that images vary from screen to screen.

The painting may be viewed by appointment at our Chelsea (London) houseboat.
