GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

"British 36-gun frigate in the South Seas, 1786"

Another classic Geoff Hunt painting; a British Navy 36-gun frigate is seen in 1786 at a South Seas island anchorage. Her awnings are spread against the fierce heat and islanders' boats approach and cluster at her port side. Astern, beneath the frigate's great red flag, is one of her own boats.

Although the frigate seems in impeccable order, with her masts, rigging and guns showing her power and sea-worthy self-reliance, she is shown facing out to a beautiful but vast ocean. It is a reminder that she may be the only British presence for thousands of miles in those early years of exploration and of how fragile her existence is, despite the power symbolised by the British flag flying at her stern.

This exquisite painting was used as the cover illustration for Peter Smalley's novel "H.M.S. Expedient". It is one of Geoff Hunt's finest depictions of the sea and light of the South Seas.
