"USS Constitution engages HMS Java"

Tuesday 29th December 1812: the British Royal Navy 38-gun frigate Java cuts under the stern of the American frigate Constitution (44-gun) to unleash a raking broadside during an engagement off the Brazilian coast.

After nearly four hours of battle, Java's ensign was pulled down, to register Constitution's captain William Bainbridge's first victory (and the ship her second) over a British frigate.
