About Us

Marine Artists.co.uk is based, appropriately, on a purpose-built Houseboat on the Thames at Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, London SW3. It was at this exact spot that Turner and Whistler lived and painted some of the greatest pictures of light and water ever created. Both painters loved and valued the changing skies and the tides of London’s great river.

By contrast, our country headquarters is a beautiful Grade II listed cruck-beamed house on the borders of the English counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire. Here there are also connections with ships and water: the main part of the house was constructed using mighty curved ship timbers from the nearby yards of Buckler’s Hard, where the immortal Agamemnon was built. Euryalus and Swiftsure were two other ships built at Buckler’s Hard that were present at Trafalgar.

Prints and paintings may be viewed at either location but by appointment only: please telephone or e-mail as far in advance as possible.

Charles Mayes has specialised in Marine prints and paintings for a number of years, working particularly closely with Geoff Hunt (now the President of Britain’s Royal Society of Marine Artists) in publishing limited edition prints and organising the commissioning of paintings.

We deal in Marine Oil Paintings from the 18th century to the present day; Limited Edition Prints; Remarques; Hand-Coloured Engravings; Water Colours and Drawings; Books, Models and Figures.
