Notes on the action: On 1st May 1810 the British 38-gun frigate Spartan (Captain Jahleel Brenton) and the 32-gun frigate Success, cruising in the Bay of Naples, chased a French force consisting of a frigate, corvette, brig and cutter into harbour at Naples. Captain Brenton realising that the enemy would be more likely to engage one frigate than two, ordered Success back to their rendezvous point off Capri and took Spartan alone into the bay to tempt the French.

The French in turn had made a plan to relieve the British frigates’ blockade of the port, packing 400 Swiss troops into their frigate and corvette and sending out at dawn on the 3rd May a very strong squadron comprising the frigate Ceres, 42 guns, the corvette Fama, 28, the cutter Achille, 10, and the brig Sparviere, 8. These were backed up by at least seven gun boats, each mounting a long 18-pounder. Including the Swiss troops it is estimated that the French deployed 95 guns and 1400 men against Spartan’s total of 46 guns and 258 men and boys.

Ceres opened fire just before 8 a.m. but Spartan held her fire until able to give Ceres a treble-shotted broadside that caused great loss among the Swiss soldiers who were drawn up on the main deck ready for boarding. Spartan then treated Fama and Sparviere to a broadside each before firing on the smaller ships as well.

At 9 a.m. the breeze died suddenly, leaving Spartan, which had been manoeuvring skilfully, exposed to fire from all sides; at this point Captain Brenton received a serious grapeshot wound in the hip and was carried below leaving Lieutenant George Willes to command the ship.

This major painting by Geoff Hunt shows the moment just after 10 a.m., when Spartan (the breeze having returned) sails through the enemy squadron discharging at the same moment both her broadsides. Having seen off Ceres and Fama, Spartan took Sparviere as a prize. CaptainBrentonrecovered from his wound and was awarded a Patriotic Fund Sword by Lloyd’s for this exceptionally gallant action.

The third ship into action at Trafalgar, the 74-gun Mars reached the enemy line at about 12.20. Captain Duff was confronted with a bunched collection of ships, his immediate opponent being the Pluton, also 74 guns, under the command of the highly capable Commodore Cosmao-Kerjulien. Mars swung to port in order to begin a classic gunnery duel with the Pluton, the moment depicted in both these sketches. Unfortunately this move misfired, since Captain Duff then saw that the Spanish 3-decker Santa Anna was right in front of him, and so swung further up into the wind to avoid collision. Cosmao-Kerjulien seized this opportunity to rake the Mars from astern, as did the Spanish Monarca; these broadsides not only killed Captain Duff but destroyed essential elements of Mars's running rigging, rendering the ship unmanoeuverable and exposing her to much further punishment. Some time later, no less a figure than Admiral Villeneuve somehow finished up aboard Mars, having surrendered to a Captain of Marines originally sent from the Conqueror.  Geoff Hunt, 2008

In this painting we have the view from within the Franco-Spanish line. Ships from left to
right are the Spanish Monarca, Pluton, Mars, the British next in line, Tonnant, and in the foreground the French Fougueux, heavily engaged on her port side with the Belleisle.

The beautiful Amphion is seen ghosting out of Valletta harbour at dawn, passing Fort St. Elmo. She carries Lord Nelson as a passenger and therefore wears his flag.  This is one of Geoff Hunt’s most poetic and atmospheric paintings; the dawn light and reflections in the water are rendered superbly. As the delighted client who commissioned the work put it “one can sense the expectation of a journey commenced”.

"British 36-gun frigate in the South Seas, 1786"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Another classic Geoff Hunt painting; a British Navy 36-gun frigate is seen in 1786 at a South Seas island anchorage. Her awnings are spread against the fierce heat and islanders' boats approach and cluster at her port side. Astern, beneath the frigate's great red flag, is one of her own boats.

Although the frigate seems in impeccable order, with her masts, rigging and guns showing her power and sea-worthy self-reliance, she is shown facing out to a beautiful but vast ocean. It is a reminder that she may be the only British presence for thousands of miles in those early years of exploration and of how fragile her existence is, despite the power symbolised by the British flag flying at her stern.

This exquisite painting was used as the cover illustration for Peter Smalley's novel "H.M.S. Expedient". It is one of Geoff Hunt's finest depictions of the sea and light of the South Seas.

Nelson's flagship Vanguard leads the squadron of thirteen 74-gun ships on one of the chases that preceded the battle of the Nile in 1798.  Vanguard's jury-rigged foremast is clearly seen - she had lost the whole foremast assembly in earlier storms but still carried studding-sails even on the jury foremast.  As the admiral is on board, Vanguard does not fly a pennant from her mainmast.

All the thirteen 74-gun ships were British-built, Common class vessels, near-identical except for their paint schemes.  The squadron was completed by the 50-gun Leander and the ex-French brig Mutine (seen on the right of the painting and commanded by Hardy, later to share Victory's deck with Nelson at Trafalgar.

What a sense of foreboding Geoff Hunt has captured in this great piece, one of the finest that even he has produced; Nelson's fleet begins to envelop the head of the French line as the sun sets.

The viewpoint for this painting is right alongside the fourth ship in the French line, Aquilon; next ahead is Spartiate and beyond her Conquerant is already engaged with HMS Goliath, on her left. Between these two we can just see the first French ship in line, the unfortunate Guerrier, which has already been partially dismasted by broadsides from HM ships Goliath and Zealous, the latter now being almost alongside her. (Zealous is here almost obscured by the Goliath).

The third British ship to pass to leeward of the French line, HMS Audacious, extreme left, is firing yet again at the hapless Guerrier; so will the two ships following her, HM ships Orion and Theseus. The remaining British ships all aimed to windward of the French line and these ships are seen approaching, to the right of the setting sun, headed by the flagship HMS Vanguard, which will fetch up outboard of the Spartiate.

"By Force of Arms"

H.M.S. Cerberus, 5th-rate Coventry class frigate, inspects Icarus, an American brig

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

Superb! A classic Geoff Hunt painting... the British frigate H.M.S.Cerberus is seen in the middle distance in fine weather, viewed from the deck of an American brig Icarus during the Revolutionary War. The American vessel is masquerading as a British ship, hence the officers on deck wear blue coats.

This is one of Geoff Hunt's best depictions of a deck scene at a moment of potential crisis for a ship. Guns have been run out on a deck angling steeply to the swell of the sea. Sailors and officers go about their work with urgency while eyeing the threatening British frigate. The cutter, guns and fighting top are beautifully painted in loving detail by Geoff Hunt, the President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.

This work was created as the cover image for James Nelson's novel "By Force of Arms", set in the period of the Revolutionary War. Cerberus was an historical ship in the British navy, a Coventry class frigate built in Cowes and launched in 1758 and depicted here with all the accuracy that Geoff Hunt brings to his painting and research. Icarus is a fictional creation of the novelist brought to realistic life by the painter.

"H.M.S. Bulwark at the International Fleet Review, 28 June 2005"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

The Fleet Review at Portsmouth, at which Her Majesty the Queen reviewed ships from many nations' Navies, formed part of Trafalgar 200, commemorating the bicentenary of the battle of Trafalgar in 1805

In the centre of Geoff Hunt's wonderful painting we see H.M.S. Bulwark (just recently deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean). To the left of the painting is H.M.S. Ocean and betwen these two ships is Bulwark's sister ship H.M.S. Albion.

To the right of Bulwark a line of frigates moves up, led by H.M.S. Cumberland and including H.M.A.S. Anzac, H.M.S. Gloucester, Westminster and Grafton and H.M.C.S. Montreal. Beyond Bulwark may be glimpsed French and Spanish vessels, including the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, and the Belgian corvette B.N.S. Westdiep. In the foreground one of Bulwark's assault craft cruises at high speed.

Geoff Hunt, President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, was on board a ship taking part in the Review and has painted this magnificent record of the day.

"Night Attack on the Bloody Revenge"

-- GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A. (British, Contemporary)

As a cloud dims the full moon's light, a ship's boat crammed with armed men appears at the stern of the American privateer Bloody Revenge. Above the brightly-lit windows of the Great Cabin a hand on deck turns to give the alarm as the first pistol shot sounds.

This beautifully atmospheric night scene by Geoff Hunt was painted for the cover of James Nelson's novel "The Blackbirder", published by Corgi in paperback, 2002. The book is set in early eighteenth century Williamsburg and forms part of the "Brethren of the Coast" trilogy.

This exceptional painting by Geoff Hunt depicts the culminating moment of a famous action sequence from Patrick O'Brian's novel "HMS Surprise" when Captain Jack Aubrey throws the little frigate Surprise across the path of a line of French 74s led by the Marengo.

O'Brian based his long fictional action sequence on the famous historical action devised and fought by Commodore Nathaniel Dance of the Honourable East India Comapny on 14th February 1804 against the French Admiral Linois, who was in command of a very powerful squadron.  Dance had no warships to defend his very valuable convoy but raised flags on his East Indiamen to indicate that they were Royal Naval ships and, forming a line of battle, took the fight to Linois, who was rattled and broke off action.

Dance was knighted for saving the hugely valuable "China Fleet" convoy and received several large financial rewards from patriotic British organisations.

With masterly understatement Geoff Hunt describes his painting as showing "An exceptionally interesting collection of vessels in San Fiorenzo Bay, Corsica, on the evening of 11th June 1796."

He goes on to elaborate: "On that day Commodore Nelson transferred his flag from Agamemnon, 64 guns, (right) to the Captain, 74 (left). Also present were the captured ex-French l’Unité  (later to be renamed Surprise), foreground, on the second day of her first commission as a Royal Naval ship; Princess Royal, 98, flagship of Vice-Admiral Linzee; and the ubiquitous little brig Speedy, 14, just coming into the bay.
